Governor Larry Hogan is delivering on his promises to improve traffic conditions and to “provide innovative transportation solutions for Maryland.” Interstate I-270 has become Maryland’s most congested area over the years. The governor’s toll lane expansion proposal will help alleviate some of the heavy traffic the Maryland and DC area experiences.

Federal authorities have approved Hogan’s plan to widen parts of the Beltway and Interstate I-270. This project is federally funded and intends to alleviate the congested highways in the Washington area. Maryland’s infrastructure needs attention to the long overdue traffic problem.  The project is estimated to cost about $5 billion.

Congestion has been a serious issue in Maryland and around the National Capital Region for decades. Adding two toll lanes in each direction of the Beltway and I-270 aims to alleviate congestion around the Washington area. The regular lanes will remain toll-free, but the two carpool lanes on I-270 would be converted to toll lanes.

Hogan has said this project is “exactly the kind of forward-thinking solution that Marylanders have been crying out for, for years if not decades.” He goes on by explaining how this project will create more jobs and opportunities for many people, “expand bike, transit, and pedestrian infrastructure.”
