Major Maryland Infrastructure Projects are Coming

Billions of dollars are headed to Maryland for our infrastructure package, which will be used to fix our roadways, bridges, and other aspects of public transit. “Since 2011, commute times have increased by 5.1% in Maryland, and on average, each driver pays $637 per year in costs due to driving on roads in need of repair,” according to the White House. This funding from the infrastructure package will have a significant positive impact on Marylanders, saving them time and money.

Some of Maryland’s package consists of:

• $4.1 billion in federal highway aid.
• An undetermined share of $1 billion to remove damaging highways or other infrastructure projects of the past that split neighborhoods.
• $409 million for bridge replacement and repairs. The White House says the state has 273 bridges and more than 2,201 miles of highway in “poor” condition.

The state plans on using part of the funding to reconstruct and repave Interstate 495, one of the high-traffic thoroughfares in the Baltimore-Washington metro area. The state will also be using the funding for bridges, drainage, and other highway projects. This infrastructure bill is a critical step in improving the quality of transit throughout the state.
